Whalley Abbey, Lancashire

In a combined commission from the Anglican Diocese of Blackburn and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salford, AHP undertook a conservation plan for Whalley Abbey in Lancashire, a grade I listed scheduled ancient monument.

Whalley was founded by the Cistercians in 1283, and retains two particularly well-preserved gateways and a western range. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the abbey became the property of the Assheton family, and the Abbot’s Lodging became a country house.

The conservation plan, prepared with Manchester-based architects Lloyd Evans Prichard, provided a comprehensive review of the site’s social, ecclesiastical and architectural history and development. Special problems addressed by the plan included appropriate future uses for standing buildings, and policies and strategies for conserving and maintaining the abbey’s ruined remains.
