Victoria Baths, Manchester

Victoria Baths, winner of BBC2’s first Restoration series, was opened in 1906. One of the most elaborate of any surviving municipal Edwardian baths in England, the grade II* listed building has a feast of architectural detail, including decorative tiles, mosaic floors, stained glass and ornate ironwork. AHP and Manchester-based architects Lloyd Evans Prichard were commissioned to prepare a conservation plan to guide future plans for restoration. AHP’s contribution was to carefully build an accurate picture of how the complex was designed, who contributed to its engineering and decorative detail, and how it functioned. Our report also charted alterations made to the Baths during the twentieth century, and assessed the building’s historic significance by comparing it to other listed Edwardian baths around the country.
