The Stockport listing project, for Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, is a partial review of listed buildings and buildings that merit inclusion on the local list. In 2004, the council approved a borough-wide conservation strategy: the need for a review of the borough’s historic buildings was identified in this as a priority.
AHP is currently working on phase II of this work, which covers two committee areas: Tame Valley, including Reddish (north of the River Mersey), and Victoria, which covers part of central Stockport and includes Hillgate conservation area. Phase I, completed by AHP in 2005, focused on an area of central Stockport that is currently being targeted for regeneration.
On completion of the review, recommendations for the local list will be considered by the council’s executive and recommendations for new statutory designation will be forwarded for consideration to English Heritage.
