Grade II* London church used as concert venue

In 2016 AHP prepared a Conservation Plan for St John at Hackney, East London for the Parochial Church Council. Still in use for worship, the Grade II* church (built in 1791-6 from designs by James Spiller) is also a major concert venue. However, over time the building had become tired and dilapidated, with a number of unsympathetic alterations and significant fabric problems. The photograph shows the interior before restoration. Research and recommendations contained in AHP's Conservation Plan informed a major lottery-funded programme of repair, adaptation, re-presentation and improved access, which was carried out by Thomas Ford & Partners in association with John Pawson. This won an RIBA Regional Award in 2022, the judges describing it as 'an exemplar project'.
