Proper understanding of historic and architectural value leads to better, more informed decision-making.
Local authorities, English Heritage and grant-giving bodies like the HLF increasingly take a long-term, holistic approach to looking after historic buildings, often by asking owners for a conservation plan.
A good conservation plan should give owners information about the value of their building or site, and provide guidelines to inform alterations, development, management or repair. A conservation statement is a shorter version of a conservation plan, and provides a basis for future research.
