Congress Theatre, Eastbourne

Designed between 1961-3 by Bryan and Norman Westwood and Partners, the grade II* listed Congress Theatre is regarded as one of the country’s outstanding modernist theatres.

The building is situated within the Devonshire Park in Eastbourne, which provides the setting for the annual International Ladies Lawn Tennis Championships. Eastbourne Borough Council commissioned AHP to draw up a conservation plan with a view to providing new conference facilities within the park.

AHP’s report provided a historic account of the theatre’s development and assessed its significance in a national context. It also examined how new facilities would affect the theatre and its setting, and set out policies for mitigating the impact. The principal objective of the study was to inform future designs and ensure continued protection for the building, taking into account its unusual setting.
