Characterisation studies

The regeneration of run-down urban areas inevitably affects townscape of historic significance. Retaining the best of the area’s historic buildings and street pattern can be vital to the creating a real sense of place and local identity, and an attractive, viable new development.

As part of Council-led plans to regenerate Blackpool, AHP completed eight historic townscape characterisation studies during 2008 and 2009. We assessed the heritage value and historic character of large areas of the town, including the Promenade, town centre and early 20th century suburbs. The project reviewed historic buildings in each area, assigning significance and recommending buildings for a new local list. AHP also recently undertook a rapid characterisation study of two suburban approaches to Cambridge, to inform future planning and designation there.
