English Heritage commissioned AHP and Manchester-based Lloyd Evans Prichard architects to prepare a conservation plan for this grade I listed scheduled ancient monument.
Established by William I in 1092, Carlisle castle is on the site of an important Roman fort. The fortification played a pivotal role as a Border stronghold from medieval times through to the 1745 Scottish uprising. The castle is still in military occupation as the headquarters of the King’s Own Border Regiment. It also houses the Cumbria Record Office.
As well as addressing a range of conservation issues, the plan considered appropriate future uses for redundant barrack buildings. It also sought to reconcile the different uses of the site – by English Heritage visitors, the Ministry of Defence and Cumbria County Council.
