Neil Burton

Director

Neil has been a director of AHP since 2001. He is an architectural historian with over thirty-five years' experience of the listed building and planning control process.

After reading History at Oxford and History of Art at Edinburgh Neil began work for the Council for Places of Worship, assessing the architectural merit of redundant churches, and then joined the Greater London Council Historic Buildings Division as a member of the historians’ team. After the abolition of the GLC he became an Inspector of Historic Buildings at English Heritage (now Historic England), at first with responsibility for churches in the north of England and subsequently for all buildings in the East Midlands region. While at English Heritage he drafted the policy statement entitled New Works in Historic Churches and also the Guidance on Alterations to Listed Buildings contained in Government Circular PPG15 concerned with Planning and Historic Environment. In 1994 he left English Heritage to become Secretary of the Georgian Group, one of the national architectural amenity societies, where he remained until joining AHP.

Neil has a particular interest in the planform, construction and functioning of domestic buildings from the sixteenth century to the present day and lectures regularly on these subject areas on various conservation courses. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a member of the Institute of Historic Buildings Conservation and has published a number of works on historic buildings, including Life in the Georgian City (with Dan Cruikshank) and Behind The Facade: The London Town House Plan 1660-1840 (with Peter Guillery).
